This guide is based on the installation conditions Zentro reviews across homes and small businesses in the Greater Toronto Area. Final recommendations depend on the property and equipment.
Check the operating-temperature rating
A camera marketed as outdoor-rated should still be checked for its documented operating range. The recorder, power supply and network equipment should remain in a suitable protected environment.
Weather resistance is more than the camera body
Cable entries, junction boxes, connectors and wall penetrations need appropriate protection. A well-rated camera can still become unreliable if moisture reaches a connector or an exterior opening is not sealed properly.
Night image quality depends on placement
Infrared reflection from soffits, walls, snow and nearby objects can wash out the image. The camera angle, lens and surrounding light often matter more than a large advertised night-vision distance.
Turret, dome or bullet?
Turret cameras are versatile for many soffit and wall locations. Bullet cameras can provide a visible deterrent and directional view. Domes protect the lens assembly but need thoughtful placement to reduce glare and reflection.
Choose around the coverage goal
Start with the distance and detail needed at the driveway, entrance, side path or loading door. Resolution, lens, low-light performance and storage should support that goal rather than a specification list alone.
